Paris, July 14: French President Emmanuel Macron has awarded Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, France’s highest civilian and military honour, making him the first Indian premier to receive such a distinction.
On Thursday, Modi received the honour at the Elysee Palace and joined the ranks of other notable world leaders, including Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa, King Charles, the then-Prince of Wales, Angela Merkel, the former chancellor of Germany and Boutros Boutros-Ghali, the former secretary general of the United Nations.
The Prime Minister was given a red carpet welcome upon his arrival here on Thursday. He is in France for a two-day official visit. He will participate in Friday’s ceremonies of French National Day alongside President Macron as the Guest of Honour.
