New Delhi, Sept 13: Seven village panchayats in Kerala’s Kozhikode, where two individuals died from the Nipah virus, have been designated as containment zones, the Kerala government stated on Wednesday. In order to stop the infection from spreading, the authorities also set restrictions and measures.

The action was taken after the state health ministry issued an alert following the confirmation of four Nipah illnesses in four individuals, including a nine-year-old kid, in the Kozhikode region. Some offices and schools in the impacted areas were also closed by the authorities.

Veena George, Kerala’s Health Minister, stated in the state assembly that the Nipah virus strain was a Bangladeshi variant that travels from person to person and has a high fatality rate despite being less contagious.

In the past, the state experienced Nipah virus outbreaks in 2018 and 2021.

An official from Kerala’s health ministry reported that over 130 people had already undergone tests for the Nipah virus, which may infect humans when they come into direct contact with infected bats, pigs, or other people.
