Islamabad, Sept 13: Imran Khan, the imprisoned former prime minister, has had his judicial remand in the cipher case extended by a special court in Pakistan until September 26.

The hearing for the cipher case was held inside the Attock Jail, where the former prime minister is currently being held, by Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain of the special court, which was recently established to hear matters involving the Official Secrets Act, 1923.

Following the conclusion of his 14-day judicial remand, former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi was also presented in court on Wednesday.

Following his conviction in the Toshakhana corruption case, the 70-year-old chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has been confined in prison since August 5. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) suspended his sentence on August 29, although he is still being held in Attock prison in connection with the cipher case. A special court in the case had extended his detention until September 13.

In connection with the leak of a confidential diplomatic cable from Pakistan’s embassy in Washington, the former cricketer-turned-politician is accused of violating the Official Secrets Act.

Khan’s detention was prolonged till September 26 by the special court hearing the case.

Qureshi’s judicial remand was also extended by the court till September 26.
