Vienna: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday engaged in discussions with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, focusing on the Ukraine war and enhancing India-Austria strategic relations. This dialogue took place during PM Modi’s first visit to Austria, following his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. At a joint press conference, PM Modi emphasized that war has no place in the world and highlighted the importance of dialogue and diplomacy.

“I am pleased that at the start of my third term, I have the opportunity to visit Austria. This visit is both historic and special, as it marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Austria in 41 years. Chancellor Karl Nehammer and I had a significant discussion today, exploring new possibilities to strengthen our ties. We have decided to give our relationship a strategic direction in areas such as infrastructure development, renewable energy, hydrogen, water and waste management, and artificial intelligence,” PM Modi stated.

The Prime Minister also addressed the Ukraine war and the situation in West Asia during his meeting with Chancellor Nehammer. “I have reiterated before that this is not the time for war. We cannot find solutions through conflict, and the killing of innocent people is unacceptable. India and Austria emphasize dialogue and diplomacy and are ready to offer any necessary support,” he added.

PM Modi highlighted the shared values of democracy and the rule of law as strong foundations for India and Austria’s relationship. He mentioned that both countries strongly condemn terrorism and are committed to addressing global challenges such as climate change and terrorism. “In the climate domain, we invite Austria to join initiatives like the International Solar Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and the Bio-fuel Alliance. We both strongly condemn terrorism and agree that it cannot be justified in any way,” he said.

During his recent meeting with President Putin, PM Modi assured the world that India stands for peace, emphasizing that peace cannot be achieved amid violence.

Chancellor Nehammer recognized India’s unique position in the global south. “It is a significant signal that India, as a founding member of BRICS, participated in the Swiss Peace Summit. Today, we discussed a stronger commitment to reviving the peace process. India’s role is crucial for Austria, especially in the context of peace processes and future peace summits,” he stated.

Nehammer also highlighted the development of the geopolitical situation that unites India and Austria. “We had intensive discussions about the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. As Austria’s Federal Chancellor, it is essential to understand India’s perspective and familiarize India with European concerns. Additionally, we discussed the conflict in the Middle East and the positive aspects of our cooperation amid these challenging geopolitical times,” he concluded.
