Kolkata: Amid ongoing unrest in neighboring Bangladesh, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday appealed to the people of her state to maintain peace and avoid provocation.

Declining to comment on the developments in Bangladesh directly, Ms. Banerjee emphasized that it is a matter for the Ministry of External Affairs to address. “I would appeal to all citizens of West Bengal to maintain peace and avoid all forms of provocation,” she told reporters at the West Bengal Assembly.

She further stated, “Whatever decision the Centre takes on this issue, we will abide by it.”

The situation in Bangladesh has escalated dramatically, with reports indicating that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and left the country amid massive protests against her government. These protests have claimed more than 106 lives in the last two days.

Ms. Banerjee’s call for peace comes at a crucial time, aiming to ensure stability and order in West Bengal despite the turmoil across the border. By pledging to follow the Centre’s decisions, she underscores her commitment to maintaining harmony and responding appropriately to the evolving situation in Bangladesh.

As the situation unfolds, the role of the Ministry of External Affairs and the Centre’s policies will be pivotal in shaping the response and measures taken by the state of West Bengal.
