GEORGETOWN: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a historic address to the Parliament of Guyana, underscored the enduring ties between India and Guyana and highlighted the values of democracy as a guiding principle for global harmony. PM Modi’s visit marks the first by an Indian Prime Minister to the Caribbean nation in 56 years.

Strengthening Historical Ties

PM Modi began his address by reflecting on his earlier visit to Guyana 24 years ago. “I am here today as India’s Prime Minister, but I have been to your beautiful country before, driven by a curiosity to understand your people and the Caribbean region,” he said.

Highlighting the 180-year-old cultural and historical ties between the two nations, PM Modi remarked, “India and Guyana share a deep bond of trust, hard work, and mutual respect.”

Call for Democracy and Cooperation

In his address, PM Modi stressed the importance of democracy as the cornerstone of progress. “For the world today, the strongest mantra to move forward is ‘Democracy First-Humanity First’,” he said.

PM Modi reaffirmed India’s stance against global conflict, stating, “This is not an era for war or conflict. This is the time to identify and isolate those who create conflict.” He called for collective efforts to foster cooperation and peace.
