NEW DELHI: In a significant statement, Canada clarified that it does not possess any evidence linking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, or National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to criminal activities within its borders. The clarification comes amidst escalating diplomatic tensions between India and Canada.

Canadian Statement on Allegations

Nathalie G. Drouin, National Security and Intelligence Advisor to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, issued a statement on Friday, addressing accusations made by Canadian officials.

“The government of Canada has not stated, nor is it aware of evidence, linking Prime Minister Modi, Minister Jaishankar, or NSA Doval to the serious criminal activity within Canada. Any suggestion to the contrary is both speculative and inaccurate,” the statement read.

This follows earlier allegations by Canadian PM Justin Trudeau accusing India of covert operations that posed a significant threat to public safety. These accusations led to the expulsion of diplomats and strained bilateral relations.

India’s Response: Rejecting Allegations

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) categorically dismissed the allegations, labeling them “baseless and politically motivated.” The ministry accused Canada of fostering anti-India sentiment and providing platforms to extremist elements, particularly in light of the investigation into the murder of pro-Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

India has called the claims a “smear campaign” and urged Canada to avoid speculative accusations that further strain ties.

Escalating Diplomatic Strain

India retaliated to the allegations by expelling six Canadian diplomats and recalling its High Commissioner from Ottawa. The MEA also warned of further retaliatory actions if Canada continued its rhetoric.

Meanwhile, Canadian media reported claims linking PM Modi to Nijjar’s killing and other alleged violent plots. The MEA dismissed the reports as “ludicrous” and called for them to be treated with “the contempt they deserve.”

Strained Relations Persist

The allegations have cast a shadow over already fragile ties between the two nations. Both countries have accused each other of political motives, and the diplomatic fallout continues to impact bilateral relations.
