New Delhi: Indian hospitality chain OYO has introduced a significant policy change in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, allowing partner hotels to deny check-ins to unmarried couples. The move, aimed at aligning with “local social sensibility,” could soon extend to other cities.

Under the new guideline, hotels can request valid proof of relationship from all couples during check-in, including those who booked online. Partner hotels have been empowered to use their discretion in declining bookings that do not meet the policy requirements.

Feedback-Driven Change

OYO stated that the policy revision stems from feedback received from civil society groups in Meerut, urging the company to take action on this matter. Residents from other cities have also petitioned for similar measures.

“OYO is committed to upholding safe and responsible hospitality practices. While we respect individual freedoms and personal liberty, we also recognise our responsibility to listen to and work with law enforcement and civil society groups in the micro-markets we operate in,” said Pawas Sharma, Region Head, OYO North India.

The company plans to periodically review the policy’s implementation and impact.

Broader Initiatives for Safe Hospitality

OYO has also launched nationwide initiatives to promote safe and responsible hospitality. These include:

•Seminars on Safe Hospitality: Joint efforts with police and hotel partners to raise awareness.

•Blacklisting Non-Compliant Hotels: Removing hotels reportedly engaged in promoting immoral activities.

•Brand Protection: Taking action against unauthorized properties misusing the OYO brand.

OYO aims to transform its perception into a brand catering to families, students, business travelers, and religious and solo tourists. The initiative also focuses on encouraging longer stays and building customer trust and loyalty.
