Delhi: Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate from the Kalkaji constituency, Atishi, launched a crowdfunding campaign on Sunday to raise ₹40 lakh for the upcoming Delhi Assembly election. Addressing the media in the capital, she urged people to support her party’s politics of work and honesty through small donations.
Atishi emphasized AAP’s reliance on grassroots funding during elections. “The AAP has always fought elections with the help of small contributions from the common man, enabling us to uphold our commitment to work and honesty,” she said. She also shared an online link for donations, seeking public support for her campaign.
Taking to platform X (formerly Twitter), Atishi expressed gratitude for the public’s past support. “Over the past 5 years, you’ve stood by me as an MLA, a minister, and now as the Chief Minister of Delhi. Your belief and donations have empowered me as a young, educated woman to pursue a career in politics,” she wrote. She appealed for continued backing as she prepares for another election campaign.
In December, senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia launched a similar crowdfunding initiative, appealing for financial support for his campaign from the Jangpura constituency.
Delhi Assembly Elections on February 5
The elections for all 70 Delhi Assembly seats are scheduled for February 5, with vote counting to begin on February 8. The AAP, seeking a third consecutive term, had won a significant majority in the past two elections, securing 67 seats in 2015 and 62 in 2020. Meanwhile, the BJP improved its tally from three seats in 2015 to eight in 2020, while the Congress failed to secure any seats in both elections.
Despite being part of the INDIA alliance at the national level, the Congress and AAP are contesting the Delhi elections independently. Atishi criticized the BJP for its delay in announcing a chief ministerial candidate. Citing “credible sources,” she claimed that BJP would field Ramesh Bidhuri, stating, “The person who hurls the ‘most abuses’ will likely be their CM candidate.”
