Patna: As temperatures continue to surge across Bihar, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave and hot day warning for 23 districts in the state, valid till May 16. A yellow alert was issued on Thursday, cautioning residents of harsh weather and advising minimal exposure during peak hours.

Westerly winds push temperatures higher

According to Ashish Kumar, a scientist at the Patna Meteorological Centre, seasonal changes over central India and Odisha are drawing hot, dry westerly winds towards Bihar. This is causing both maximum and minimum temperatures to rise, resulting in discomfort both day and night.

Rohtas scorches as hottest district

In the past 24 hours, Rohtas recorded the state’s highest temperature at 43.2°C, followed by Gaya at 42.6°C, Banka at 41°C, and Patna at 40.9°C. At least six districts have seen temperatures above 39°C, and conditions are expected to worsen before improving.

Rain expected in select districts

While heatwave conditions prevail, the IMD forecasts light rain and thunderstorm activity in Saharsa, Madhepura, Purnia, Katihar, Araria, Kishanganj, and Supaul. Wind speeds in these areas may reach 30–50 km/h, offering temporary relief.

Three-day forecast

May 15: Light rain and thunder in northeastern districts, continued heat in southern Bihar.

May 16: Thunderstorms and lightning likely in Champaran, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, and Madhubani.

May 17–18: Risk of thunderstorms in northern Bihar, with humidity and heat persisting in southwestern regions.

Nationwide weather shifts

Severe weather patterns are affecting 20 states, with rain and strong winds expected in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh. Meanwhile, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh remain under heatwave alerts.

Monsoon to reach Kerala by May 27

According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon has advanced into the Bay of Bengal and is expected to hit Kerala by May 27, indicating a timely and possibly normal monsoon season. This year, the monsoon reached the Andaman-Nicobar Islands 12 days early.

Do’s and Don’ts during heatwave

Doctors and experts advise avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours, staying hydrated, and wearing light cotton clothing. Special caution is urged for children, the elderly, and individuals with existing health conditions.
