New Delhi: Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Thursday raised serious questions about Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s sudden resignation, calling the development suspicious and pointing to the lack of transparency from the ruling government. Pilot’s comments come amid growing political speculation and a conspicuous silence from the BJP leadership.

‘Something Happened Behind the Scenes,’ Says Pilot

Speaking to reporters in his hometown of Tonk, Rajasthan, Pilot said, “The vice president holds the second-highest constitutional position in the country. The BJP and the Central government have consistently misused constitutional posts and institutions.” He noted the absence of any formal farewell or explanation as a red flag, adding, “Something has definitely happened behind the scenes which led to his unexpected resignation.”

The Congress has repeatedly expressed doubt over Dhankhar’s exit, which was announced abruptly earlier this week, citing “health concerns” as the official reason.

Congress Pushes for Dignified Farewell, Links Resignation to Judicial Controversy

The party is also demanding a formal farewell for Dhankhar, a convention usually observed for top constitutional functionaries. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh raised this request during a Business Advisory Committee meeting in Parliament, but government representatives, including JP Nadda and Kiren Rijiju, reportedly remained silent.

According to party sources, the Congress suspects Dhankhar was compelled to resign after he accepted a motion signed by Opposition MPs seeking the removal of Justice Yashwant Varma. Justice Varma has been under scrutiny since large sums of charred currency were found at his residence, though the government has not made any official statement connecting the two events.

Resignation Timing Raises Eyebrows

The resignation also coincides with a farewell session in Rajya Sabha for six other outgoing members, further intensifying questions around the timing and handling of Dhankhar’s departure. Despite the calls for a dignified send-off, no Opposition parties except Congress have joined the demand, and the government has remained tight-lipped on the matter.

As political circles continue to debate the true reason behind Dhankhar’s resignation, the lack of clarity has only fueled more speculation.
