New Delhi: India has welcomed the US-brokered peace agreement between Israel and Hamas that aims to secure the release of hostages in Gaza and initiate a phased withdrawal of Israeli troops. The deal, confirmed earlier by former US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, seeks to bring an end to the conflict that has gripped the Middle East since 2023.
Modi Praises Strong Leadership
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the agreement as a reflection of Netanyahu’s “strong leadership” and expressed hope that it would pave the way for lasting peace in Gaza. “We welcome the agreement on the first phase of President Trump’s peace plan. This is also a reflection of the strong leadership of PM Netanyahu. We hope the release of hostages and enhanced humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza will bring respite to them and pave the way for lasting peace,” he posted online, tagging both Trump and Netanyahu.
Details Of The Peace Deal
Under the deal, Hamas will release all hostages “very soon” while Israeli forces will retreat beyond an agreed line. Trump described it as a “great day” for Israel and the Arab-Muslim world. Netanyahu called the agreement a “diplomatic success” and a “national and moral victory” for Israel, crediting steadfast military action and US support for reaching this critical turning point.
Ending A Two-Year Conflict
The Israel-Hamas deal aims to end the war that began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israeli border towns. In the first phase, Hamas is expected to free 47 remaining hostages, both alive and dead, in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails.
