Imphal: Protests over the deaths of two children in a recent bomb blast in Manipur turned violent after demonstrators clashed with security forces during a torch rally in Imphal. Authorities said the unrest escalated when protesters attempted to move toward restricted areas despite curfew orders.

Torch Rally Turns Tense
A seven-kilometre torch procession was organised from Mayai Lambi to Keishamthong in Imphal West district on Monday night. The rally was held in response to the deaths of two children killed in a blast at Tronglaobi in Bishnupur district on April 7.

The situation worsened when participants demanded permission to march further toward Keisampat, an area near Lok Bhavan and the BJP state office.

Security Forces Use Tear Gas
Police said security personnel fired multiple rounds of tear gas after hundreds of protesters defied curfew restrictions. Officials also alleged that some demonstrators threw stones and iron pellets using catapults, putting security staff at risk.

Curfew restrictions remain in force across all five valley districts from 5 pm to 5 am, banning movement outside homes during those hours.

Arrests and Vigil Held Elsewhere
Manipur Police said 19 people were arrested for violating curfew, blocking roads, and damaging public property in the Greater Imphal area. Most arrests were made in Imphal West district.

In Ukhrul district, a separate candlelight vigil was held to pay tribute to two Tangkhul Naga civilians who were killed in an ambush in the TM Kasom area on April 18.
