INDIA Bloc Fractures as DMK Blasts Congress for Backing Vijay’s TVK in Tamil Nadu

New Delhi: The INDIA bloc has suffered a visible crack following the Tamil Nadu election results, with the MK Stalin-led DMK openly accusing its ally Congress of betrayal for extending support to actor-politician Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

DMK Calls Congress Move ‘Backstabbing’

DMK joint secretary and spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai described Congress’ decision to align with TVK as a foolhardy move driven by ego rather than political logic. He reminded Congress of the DMK’s longstanding support, including MK Stalin’s backing of Rahul Gandhi as the prime ministerial candidate in 2024, and argued that it was DMK’s groundwork that helped Congress win five seats in Tamil Nadu.

DMK Questions Congress’s Political Judgment

Annadurai pointed out that TVK needs 11 more seats to reach a majority, while AIADMK with 47 seats has already offered unconditional support to Vijay. He questioned why Congress, with just five seats, would expect Vijay to prioritise their backing over a far larger ally. He warned that Congress would soon regret this decision and that the move could send damaging ripples across the broader INDIA bloc, raising doubts in the minds of leaders like Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, and Uddhav Thackeray.

Congress Defends Its Position

Congress MP Manickam Tagore took a different view, arguing that with half of DMK’s cabinet ministers losing their seats, continuing the old alliance would amount to standing with those rejected by voters. He framed the support for TVK as a necessary step to prevent BJP from gaining a foothold in Tamil Nadu.

TVK’s Historic Debut Reshapes Tamil Nadu Politics

Vijay’s TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member assembly, falling short of a majority but fundamentally disrupting the decades-long dominance of DMK and AIADMK. Vijay is set to take oath as Chief Minister on May 7. Congress’ decision to back TVK despite holding only six seats has intensified speculation about a broader political realignment and raised serious questions about the future cohesion of the INDIA bloc nationally.
