Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate arrested former West Bengal minister and TMC leader Sujit Bose on Monday night in connection with the South Dum Dum municipal recruitment scam, after nearly 10 hours of questioning at the ED office.
Allegations Against Sujit Bose
Sujit Bose is accused of illegally recruiting approximately 150 people in the South Dum Dum Municipal Corporation between 2014 and 2018, allegedly accepting money and flats in return. At the time of the alleged irregularities, Bose was serving as the Vice Chairman of Dum Dum Municipality. He arrived at the ED office along with his son Samudra Bose at around 10:30 am on Monday and was arrested late at night following prolonged interrogation.
Background of the Case
The CBI had registered an FIR against Bose on the directions of the Calcutta High Court. The ED subsequently conducted raids at Bose’s premises in January 2024 and October 2025. During the recent assembly election campaign, the ED had sent him multiple notices. Bose approached the Calcutta High Court seeking exemption from appearing before the ED, citing election commitments. He appeared before ED officials on May 1 and was summoned again on May 11, following which he was arrested.
Lost Recent Assembly Election by Large Margin
A three-time MLA from Bidhannagar, Sujit Bose lost the recent West Bengal assembly election to BJP’s Sharadwat Mukherjee by a margin of over 37,000 votes.
