Ranchi, Sept.2: Bhagwan Mahavir Medica SuperSpecialty Hospital started a one-year skill development programme in the ophthalmology department for students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.

In its first batch as many as five students, all girls started training from Wednesday.

Dr Anindya Anuradha informed Lagatar 24.com saying the training is being imparted free of cost and the girls in the first batch will be trained in such a way that they will be able to get a job on their own.  She said all those selected for training have been kept in hostels and being provided everything free of cost.

Explaining the training schedule she said that the training will start at 8 am every day and continue till 7 pm. In the first three months, which is the probation period, Dr Anuradha said, trainees will be asked to work as patient care assistants to ensure the development of empathy besides a sense of safety and sincerity in them.

“After three months of probation period, they will be trained in the fields according to their capability and interests. They could be trained as optometrists or ophthalmic nurses or patient counsellors or patient care assistants. They will not be given any certificate but they will be trained enough that they can be used at any eye hospital or depending on vacancy they can be absorbed in the Medica too,” Dr Anuradha said.

During the training programme, Dr Anuradha said, trainees will also be made aware of their career advancement to ensure that they can do their best.

“Out of the five selected for training, one has lost their mother and father, two have lost their fathers and two belong to farmers’ families. Our aim is to make them skilled enough to ensure that they would not be able to become self-dependent but make others self-dependent also,” Dr Anuradha said.
