Jamshedpur, Oct 6: A 32-year-old ‘girl’ who was seeking a suitable match for her through an online matrimonial site has been duped of Rs 11 lakhs by a cyber-criminal.

A resident of Sonari, the victim had a month ago sought for the bridegroom through the popular matrimony site, Shaadi. com, giving her bio-data.

Almost a month after, she encountered allegedly an US-based doctor over the phone. The so-called doctor lured the girl into marrying her after going through a week-long chat over the phone.

Eventually, the doctor expressed his willingness to come to India to meet his would-be wife and of course got consent from the victim.

On Saturday, the girl got a call from the said doctor who informed her that he has already come to Mumbai, but was in a legal hassle with a bunch of customs officials.

The doctor claimed while intimating his sweetheart that he was carrying a few costly gifts for her, but the items were seized by the Customs officials who were demanding a huge amount to release them.  He also expressed his helplessness as he was left with not much money.

On finding him in distress, she immediately agreed to do what the doctor needed. Subsequently, the girl transferred Rs 11 lakhs through as many as 20 transactions to various bank accounts. Lastly, she began to doubt while talking to the so-called doctor, but she was too late to understand the game.

Having transferred her the whole deposit when the girl wanted to know whether the doctor’s problem was sorted out, the call she had made did not materialise. His cellphone was found switched off. Then only the victim realised her mistake and on Tuesday turned up at the Bistupur-based cyber thana for lodging an FIR against the fake doctor.

OC, Cyber thana, inspector Upendra Mandal confirmed the case.

“We have registered a case on the FIR lodged by the victim who has been duped of Rs 11 lakhs by a cyber-criminal. We are trying to crack the case, ” said Mandal.

The inspector said they have taken out the mobile tower location of the accused’s cellphone number today and found that calls to the victim was being made from Delhi and not from the USA.
