New Delhi, Oct.16: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will travel to Israel on Sunday for an official visit, during which he will meet with his Israeli colleague, Yair Lapid, to discuss ways to improve the two nations’ strategic cooperation.

This will be Jaishankar’s first trip to the country as the Minister of External Affairs.

On the invitation of Alternate Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Lapid, Jaishankar will undertake an official visit to Israel from October 17 to 21, according to a statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs on Saturday.

During his tour, he will meet with Lapid and also pay visits to President Isaac Herzog, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, and Knesset Speaker Mickey Levy.

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit to Israel in July 2017, India and Israel elevated their relations to a strategic alliance.

Since then, the two nations’ relationship has centred on strengthening their knowledge-based partnership, which includes collaboration in innovation and research, as well as bolstering the ‘Make in India’ effort, according to the MEA.

In his tour, Jaishankar will meet with members of Israel’s Indian-origin Jewish community, indologists, Indian students seeking degrees in Israeli universities, and businesspeople, including those at the hi-tech sector, according to the announcement.

The tour would also be an opportunity to pay honour to the brave Indian soldiers who gave their lives in the region, particularly during World War I, according to the statement.
