Dharam Sansad hate speech: Haridwar Court rejects Yati Narsinghanand’s bail plea

Haridwar, Jan 20: Yati Narsinghanand, accused of delivering a hate speech including unpleasant words against Muslims during a Dharam Sansad held in Haridwar last year, had his bail application denied by a district court in Uttarakhand on Wednesday.

Yati Narsinghanand’s bail application was denied by the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Haridwar, who was also charged with uttering derogatory statements about women in the past. He was caught on January 15 and sentenced to 14 days in jail.

He was charged under the Indian Penal Code’s Sections 295 (deliberate and malicious acts intended to enrage religious feelings), 509 (intentionally insulting the modesty of any woman), 323 (voluntarily causing harm), 504 (insult intended to provoke breach of peace), and 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on the basis of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc).

After his arrest, Jitendra Tyagi (alias Waseem Rizvi), the former chairman of Uttar Pradesh’s Shia Waqf Board, was denied bail. Under Section 153A (promoting enmity between various groups and acts harmful to harmony) and Section 298 (promoting enmity between different groups and acts deleterious to harmony), Tyagi was arrested in connection with the Dharam Sansad hate speech case (words to hurt religious feelings).

The Supreme Court gave notice to the Central and Uttarakhand governments earlier this month in public interest litigation (PIL) demanding an investigation into alleged anti-Muslim hate speech made at the Haridwar Dharam Sansad last year.
