Bengaluru, Feb 14: The Karnataka High Court started hearings on the lawsuit challenging the prohibition on hijab in colleges on Monday, amid the ongoing Hijab debate. The interim order of not allowing hijabs will continue as the bench had restrained the students from wearing hijab or religious attire till further orders.
Meanwhile, the High Court of Karnataka urged the media to be more responsible.
The petitioner’s senior attorney, Devadatt Kamat, argued before the Karnataka High Court that the GO (government order) is in violation of Article 25, and it is not legally viable. Muslim women are also permitted to wear headscarves at Kendriya Vidyalaya, according to Kamal.
The petitioners have asked the court to allow girls to continue their education while wearing hijab in class, while the government has claimed that it is important to determine whether hijab is required in Islam.
The full bench of the Karnataka high court comprising chief justice Ritu Raj Awasthi and Justices Krishna S Dixit and JM Khazi has been adjourned for Tuesday and will begin at 2.30pm.
Notably on Friday, High Court passed an interim order asking students not to wear any religious dress to class in educational institutions that have prescribed uniforms.
