Dumka, Feb 17: Delhi police arrested two men from Dumka for allegedly cheating multiple customers under the guise of providing customer service support, police informed on Thursday.

The arrested persons have been identified as Abhishek Kumar (22) and his accomplice Raju Ansari (22).

“Kumar who is the mastermind behind the crime, used to upload his contact number on the internet in the name of various customer care sites. He has been running his gang for the past six months and his accomplice Ansari arranged the bank accounts from his native village of Asansol, West Bengal,” police said.

“Eight bank accounts having Rs 82 lakhs cheated from multiple victims have been freezed,” police added.

The case was brought to light after one of the victims called the police after being scammed out of Rs. 4.78 lakhs by the accused. According to the police, the victim submitted a complaint stating that on January 7, he obtained the accuser’s phone number when searching for makemytrip.com customer service number in order to obtain a refund from the website.

He expressed his dissatisfaction to the caller, who pretended to be an employee of the ‘make my trip’ department, according to authorities.

The victim filled out a form that was provided to him on his phone as advised by the scammer. On the accused’s orders, he also installed the Anydesk App and SMS forwarding App in his phone. Following that, his HDFC bank account was debited for Rs 4,78,278.

The accused’s phone was discovered switched off, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) R Sathiyasundram. Following an investigation of the accused’s bank records, it was discovered that the accused had made cash withdrawals from various merchants. The victim’s account transaction records were examined by the Cyber Team, who discovered that the defrauded funds had been redirected to a different platform.

“On investigation, it was revealed that the shopping was made from Big Bazaar, Bhagalpur, Bihar, make my trip travel vouchers and I-phone 12 and 3 gold bars were delivered at Dumka, Jharkhand. After conducting technical investigation, it was found that the cheater’s network is based at Dumka, Jharkhand. Then a raid was conducted at Dumka and the two accused were nabbed,” he said.

During questioning, accused Abhishek revealed that he uses Google Ads to advertise his phone number for customer service for flipkart, make my trip, and airlines. When he receives a call from the victim, he instructs him to fill out the form and install the “Any Desk App.” After installing the app, he can use the Any Desk app to watch and control the victim’s screen, as well as upload the SMS forwarder app to the complainant’s phone to route the bank SMS, according to the officer.
