UK to scrap remaining Covid-related restrictions next week

London, Feb 20: Beginning next week, those infected with COVID-19 will not be legally forced to self-isolate, according to the British government.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that lifting all of the legislative constraints imposed to combat the virus spread will allow people in the UK to protect them without jeopardizing their freedoms.

However, other government scientists suggested it was a hazardous approach that could result in an increase in illnesses and undermine the country’s defences against future strains that are more virulent.

Most virus restrictions were repealed in January by Johnson’s Conservative government, which scrapped vaccine passports for venues and ended mask mandates in most settings in England except hospitals.

Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have also begun to open up, though at a slower pace.

Because of the UK’s high vaccination rates and the milder omicron form, loosening restrictions did not result in an increase in hospitalizations or deaths. Both are decreasing, while the UK still has Europe’s greatest coronavirus toll, second only to Russia, with over 160,000 deaths documented.

In the United Kingdom, 85% of people aged 12 and over have had two vaccine doses, with nearly two-thirds receiving a third booster shot.

As part of a shift away from government interference and toward personal responsibility, the Conservative government has announced that it will repeal all remaining domestic COVID restrictions that restrict public liberties.

After a positive COVID-19 test, the legal obligation to isolate for at least five days will be replaced with advising measures, and the coronavirus will be treated more like the flu as it becomes endemic.

Vaccines and treatments are part of the new strategy, while the government says “monitoring mechanisms and contingency measures will be preserved” if necessary.
