India flags off first consignment of humanitarian aid of 50,000 tonnes wheat to Afghanistan

Amritsar, Feb 22: The foreign Secretary of India, Harsh V Shringla on Tuesday flagged off the first consignment of humanitarian aid of 50,000 tonnes of wheat to Afghanistan. In a ceremony held at Amritsar today, Foreign Secretary Harsh V Shringla along with Afghan Ambassador Farid Mamundzay and World Food Program Country Director Bishaw Parajuli flagged off 1st convoy of 50 trucks carrying 2500 MT of wheat assistance from India to Afghanistan via Pakistan.

“We’re grateful to the Government of India that they stood by Afghanistan during difficult times. 50,000 metric tonnes of wheat will be delivered in a month to the country and will be distributed to Afghan people facing food scarcity,” said Farid Mamundzay, Afghan Ambassador to India.

“As per WFP 20 million people require food in Afghanistan and India being a big brother is helping us through food aids and we are thankful for that,” he added.

Notably, the Government of India had in October 2021 announced that it would send 50,000 MT of wheat to Afghanistan.  For this, a high-level meeting of officials of Land Port Authority of India (LPAI), Border Security Force (BSF), customs, Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) and Punjab Police was held at the Integrated Check Post (ICP), Attari on Monday.
