Russia attacks Ukraine nuclear plant; fire put out, radiation levels controlled

Kyiv, March 4: The Russian forces bombarded Europe’s largest nuclear reactor early Friday which caused the fire in the administrative building of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.

The incident happened when the Russian forces intensified their onslaught on a key energy-producing Ukrainian city and gained momentum in their quest to cut Ukraine off from the sea.

Although there was no apparent cause for concern about the facility’s damage, the attack prompted a phone contact between US President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the US Department of Energy alerted its nuclear incident response team as a precaution.

As the invasion reached its second week, the attack on the eastern city of Enerhodar and its Zaporizhzhia nuclear reactor unfolded, and another round of talks between the two sides generated a tentative agreement to establish safe corridors to evacuate civilians and supply humanitarian relief.

Andriy Tuz, a spokesman for the nuclear station, told Ukrainian television that shells were dropping straight on the facility, causing one of its six reactors to catch fire. That reactor is now undergoing renovations and is not operational, but he claims there is nuclear fuel within.

Firefighters can’t get close the flames because they’re being shot at, he added, and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted a request to Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the assault and allow fire crews inside.
