Geneva, March 4: The United Nations Human Rights Council voted on Friday for a high-level investigation into violations committed during Russia’s military operation on Ukraine, which began last week.
The resolution clears the way for the creation of an independent international investigation panel, which will “examine all alleged violations and abuses… in the context of the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine,” according to the council.
However, 13 countries including India and China, abstains at the UN Human Rights Council vote on the establishment of an independent international inquiry commission in the aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
According to AFP, at least 32 members of the 47-member council voted to start the highest-level investigation possible into potential human rights breaches.
Meanwhile, Russia and Eritrea voted against the motion.
“I thank all those who voted for the right cause,” said Ukrainian ambassador.
