Chandigarh, March 10: On the Amritsar East Assembly seat in Punjab, AAP candidate Jeevan Jyot Kaur defeated Congress head Navjot Singh Sidhu and senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia.
Sidhu, the sitting MLA from the constituency, faced former state minister Majithia, who is the brother-in-law of SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal, in a decisive struggle in Amritsar (East). On the other side, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ran a female candidate, Jeevan Jyot Kaur, for the seat.
Kaur received a total of 39,679 votes in the Assembly seat of Amritsar East. With 32,929 votes, Congress’ Sidhu came in second behind the AAP contender. Majithia came in third place with 25,188 votes.
This time in Punjab, the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Shiromani Akali Dal-Bahujan Samaj Party combination, and the Bharatiya Janata Party-former chief minister Amarinder Singh’s Punjab Lok Congress party coalition were all important players.
