Khatkar Kalan, March 16: Punjab Chief Minister-elect Bhagwant Mann will take the oath of office today in Khatkar Kalan, where independence warrior Bhagat Singh was born. The swearing-in ceremony will include Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and other senior Aam Aadmi Party leaders.

The Aam Aadmi Party won 92 seats in the 117-seat Punjab Assembly, a landslide victory. Mann defeated Congress candidate Dalvir Singh Goldy by 58,206 votes in the Dhuri assembly constituency in Sangrur district.

Bhagwant Mann has welcomed the people of Punjab to the occasion, adding that he will be joined by the state’s 3 crore people in taking the oath.

“On March 16, in Bhagat Singh’s Khatkar Kalan, not just Bhagwant Mann will take the oath and become CM, but along with me all three crore people of Punjab will also become CM. Together we will make Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s Rangla Punjab,” said Mann.

He has also asked males to wear turbans of the ‘basanti’ (yellow) colour and women to wear basanti ‘dupattas.’

The event is expected to attract over 3 lakh people, according to organisers. For the oath-taking ceremony, elaborate security precautions have been arranged.

Nearly 10,000 security personnel have been deployed for the event, according to officials, including Inspector General and Senior Superintendent Police rank officers.

Because of the large crowd expected for the swearing-in ceremony, the district administration has declared today a school vacation.
