New Delhi, March 22: Union Cabinet has given its approval on Tuesday to a bill that would consolidate Delhi’s three municipal corporations into one. Once the Bill is passed by parliament and the President signs it, the three existing civic organisations – the East Delhi Municipal Corporation, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, and the South Delhi Municipal Corporation – would merge into one.

The Bill, which proposes changes to the statute that allowed the trifurcation, is expected to be introduced next week in Parliament.

“Today union cabinet approved the unification of three municipal corporations – North, South and East” to one MCD. A bill for the three corporations is likely to be tabled in Parliament on March 24 or 25. After unification of three corporations approved by the Parliament, Delhi will have one mayor in place of the existing three,” said sources.

The Delhi Municipal Corporation was divided into three Municipal Corporations in 2011 by the Delhi Municipal Corporation Amendment Act, 1911: South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) (Delhi Act, 12 Of 2011).

The state electoral commission postponed the announcement of municipal vote dates earlier this month, citing the center’s plans to merge the three municipal corporations — South, East, and North.
