Ranchi, April 18: The Jharkhand High Court sought information regarding the action taken against the concerned police officials who sent five youths to jail in a murder case that was not committed.

Justice Sanjay Dwivedi sought the information while hearing a petition demanding compensation for those innocent youths who had to remain in jail for a long time due to negligence in the police investigation.

The case arose after a young woman named Preeti went missing from the Chutia police station area in the year 2014. A few days after her family members lodged a complaint, the body of a young woman was recovered by the police from Bundu.

The police believed that the body belonged to the same girl, about whom a complaint has been lodged at the Chutia police station. Therefore, after the body was recovered, the police arrested 5 youths from different areas of Ranchi. Those arrested were sent to jail.

When the youths were in jail, the girl whom police had thought murdered was noticed roaming in the city. The matter hogged the limelight and the youths were released after completion of judicial formalities. After release, the youths knocked on the door of the court for compensation.

The court observed that while the five were sent to jail for suspecting a girl murdered but so far failed to collect clear information about the girl whose body was recovered in Bundu.

The court has now fixed May 2 as the date for the next hearing in the matter.
