New Delhi, April 20: The Supreme Court ordered the status quo on Wednesday, halting the North Delhi Municipal Corporation’s demolition effort in Jahangirpuri, Northwest Delhi.

Dushyant Dave, Kapil Sibal, PV Surendranath, and Prashant Bhushan, senior counsel, raised the issue before Chief Justice NV Ramana. The CJI ordered the status quo because the demolition drive in riot-hit Jahangirpuri was absolutely illegal and no notice was given to anyone, as Dushyant Dave stated.

“Let the matter be taken up tomorrow along with the other matter,” the CJI said.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of North Delhi Municipal Corporation, Raja Iqbal Singh said after the Supreme Court ordered a status-quo on the demolition drive, “We will follow the SC order and take action accordingly.”

The subject of Jahangirpuri’s demolition drive was brought before the Supreme Court in response to a petition filed by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind opposing the use of bulldozers to demolish the homes of riot suspects in Madhya Pradesh, which was set for urgent hearing before the Chief Justice.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the BJP-run North Delhi Municipal Corporation was scheduled to conduct a demotion drive in the Jahangirpuri neighbourhood. For the operation, the civic authority requested 400 police officers from the Delhi Police.
