Dumka: A 27-year-old driver of a tractor died after a train hit its trailer partially along Dumka-Bhagalpur track near Bhataniya village under Jama police station limit of the district this morning.

The deceased tractor driver has been identified as Lalchandra Rai of Tilatand village who is believed to have been listening to music on his earphones while crossing the rail track and failed to notice the moving Dumka-Bhagalpur passenger train which hit its trailer.

The loco driver according to the police applied the brake to avert the collision as he witnessed the tractor approaching the track but by that time, it was too late to avert the mild collision in which the trailer got stuck in the engine of the train.

“By the time the collision happened the engine of the tractor had already crossed the track and overturned,” the officer-in-charge (OC) of the Jama police station Jitendra Kumar Singh.

He added that the driver had received internal injuries after falling from the tractor and was rushed to the Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital (PJMCH) where he succumbed to the injuries while being treated.

The OC further said that the incident took place merely 15 minutes after the passenger train left Dumka railway station at 9:20 AM which restarted for his further destinations after 50 minutes when the stuck trailer was ejected by using an excavator and loading machine.

“The spot where the collision between the train and tractor took place is unauthorisedly used by the tractor drivers to cross the rail track by constructing an unmetalled road,” the OC pointed out.
