Kolkata, May 3: Mamata Banerjee took aim at the central government on Tuesday as India celebrated Eid, saying Bengal provides an example for the country in terms of communal unity. “The unity being demonstrated in Bengal… no other place in the country is setting such an example. That’s why they are jealous. And that’s why they abuse us,” she said.

Banerjee, speaking at a prayer for Eid-ul-Fitr held on a rain-soaked Red Road in Kolkata, exhorted the crowd not to be afraid but to unite for a better future.

“The situation in the country is not fine. The policy of divide and rule and politics of isolation going on in the country are not correct. Do not be scared and keep on fighting,” she said.

On Red Road, some 14,000 people had assembled for the Eid prayer. Banerjee addressed them, assuring them that “neither I, my party, nor my government will do anything to make you sad.” The Bengal chief minister’s comments come as the country celebrates both the Muslim Eid and the Hindu Akshaya Tritya on the same day. Notably, Bengal was one of the states that suffered violence during Ram Navami Jayanti processions last month.
