Mumbai, May 30: Indrani Mukerjea, the former media baron who was recently granted bail in the case of her daughter Sheena Bora’s alleged murder, has filed a petition in Bombay High Court to nullify another case filed against her on charges of rioting in jail and impeding police in their duties.
On May 20, Indrani Mukerjea was released from the Byculla women’s prison after the Supreme Court granted her bail in the Sheena Bora murder case.
Notably, she was in jail for nearly seven years. On May 19, Indrani Mukerjea filed a petition in the High Court, through her lawyer Sana Raees Khan, to have a FIR filed against her by the Mumbai police on June 24, 2017, following a riotous incident at the Byculla prison.
The riot started after a fellow inmate, Manjula Shetye, was allegedly beaten up by jail personnel, and she died as a result.
She is accused of instigating the detainees to yell at police officers and throw plates and pots at them. Indrani Mukerjea alleged in her plea to the High Court that she was implicated in the case with the intent to harass and torture her.
In her plea, Indrani Mukerjea, who submitted the petition on May 19, stated that she was ‘neither a part of the claimed attack nor was she involved in creating any undue nuisance in the prison.’ Now, the plea is likely to be heard on June 1.
