Ranchi, Mar 10: A 50-year-old dying Laxmi Rajak of Jamshedpur got a fresh lease of life due to the activist approach of the Cardio-thoracic vascular surgery department of the RIMS.
After the open-heart surgery, when the high-risk patient was being shifted from the OT (2nd floor) to the ICU ward (5th floor), the elevator stopped functioning which created a mess over the 2nd floor. After that, the entire medical staff took the patient by using the ramp to the 5th floor.
Though several challenges are being faced by the doctors and staff at RIMS still the whole medical staff was dedicated to saving the patient’s life at any cost.
Before the surgery, the HOD of the CTVS department Dr Vineet Mahajan said that Laxmi is suffering from Rheumatic heart disease and her mitral valve is damaged. The general condition of the patient is very weak and also her heart muscles are weak. In such a case there are only 80% chances that the patient might survive.
After the open heart surgery which was performed today, Dr Vineet said that after stopping the heart for one hour her mitral valve was replaced with a mechanical one (25 no. St. Jude).
“It was a very high-risk surgery as the patient was very weak but everything went well and now she is recovering,” Dr Vineet said.
At the same time, the third case of double valve replacement in the history of the RIMS was performed by Dr Anshul Kumar under the guidance of Dr Vineet Mahajan. 28-year-old Khush Kumar got a fresh lease of life after Dr Anshul replaced both mitral and aortic valves of the patient in a single surgery which went on for 4 hours.
Remembering the first double valve replacement case, Dr Anshul said, “The first double valve replacement (DVR) was conducted at RIMS before the arrival of Dr Vineet Mahajan. After the arrival of Dr Vineet, the second case DVR was performed by HOD himself and the third was performed yesterday under the leadership of HOD.”
“The CTVS department is regularly performing one open-heart surgery a day and weekly 5-6 open-heart surgeries with one thoracic or vascular surgery a day. We are planning to start two open-heart surgeries a day but in the absence of staff the goal is not getting fulfilled,” Dr Anshul said.
The surgery of Laxmi was performed by Dr Vineet Mahajan with the assistance of Dr Anshul Kumar (Surgeon), Dr Mukesh Kumar (Anaesthesiologist), Dr Khushboo (Anaesthesiologist), Dr Shiyo Priye (Anaesthesiologist) and Perfusionist Amit Kumar Singh.
