New Delhi: Outgoing Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced his decision to give up all government facilities, including security, and vacate his official residence within the next 15 days, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) confirmed on Wednesday. This decision follows his resignation from the chief minister’s post earlier this week.
AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh revealed in a press conference that Kejriwal’s first action after resigning was to vacate his official bungalow at 6, Flagstaff Road. While it was initially stated that Kejriwal would move out within a week, the party later clarified that the CM and his family would vacate the residence within 15 days.
“A search is underway for a suitable accommodation for Kejriwal and his family,” Singh said, adding that Kejriwal would give up all privileges provided to him as CM, including the official residence, vehicles, and security detail, choosing instead to live like a “common man.”
Kejriwal’s decision comes despite concerns for his security, as Singh pointed out. “He has faced multiple attacks in the past, and we are worried about the safety of his family,” Singh said. However, Kejriwal, who previously served as chief minister in 2013 while driving an old blue Wagon R, remains resolute, stating, “I was in jail for six months among dreaded criminals, and God protected me.”
Addressing allegations of corruption leveled by the BJP, Singh asserted that Kejriwal’s resignation was a stand against such accusations. He emphasized that Kejriwal is the first leader in India’s political history to tell voters: “If I am honest, vote for me; if not, don’t.”
Atishi, an AAP leader, has since staked her claim to form the next Delhi government following Kejriwal’s resignation.
