New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal has proposed Atishi’s name as the new leader of the AAP Delhi Legislative Party, positioning her to become the next Chief Minister of Delhi. The proposal, made on Tuesday, was unanimously supported by all party MLAs, signaling widespread agreement within the party for her appointment.

Atishi’s elevation to the top post is a testament to her extensive responsibilities and leadership in the government. Currently, she holds 13 ministerial portfolios, making her a key figure in the Delhi administration.

Party insiders highlight her growing prominence within AAP, noting that Kejriwal had earlier suggested that Atishi represent him by hoisting the national flag at the Delhi government’s Independence Day function while he was in jail. However, Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena nominated Minister Kailash Gahlot for the role.

As the MLA representing Kalkaji, Atishi has played a crucial role in shaping the party’s policies and communication strategies. She has been vocal on significant issues, including the ongoing Delhi water dispute with neighboring states, and has taken on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Lieutenant Governor on various fronts.

Atishi’s journey with AAP began with her involvement in the 2013 Delhi assembly elections, where she was a key member of the manifesto drafting committee. Since then, she has been instrumental in the party’s growth and policy formulation, establishing herself as a prominent leader in the national capital.

Her appointment marks the return of a woman to the Chief Minister’s office in Delhi after a decade, with her predecessor being Sheila Dikshit, who served from 1998 to 2013.
