BCI Chairman Claims Up to 40 Percent of Lawyers May Be Practising With Fake Degrees

Ranchi: Bar Council of India (BCI) Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra has made a startling claim that approximately 35 to 40 percent of lawyers practising in Indian courts may be doing so on the basis of fake or fraudulent degrees and certificates, adding that the BCI has been receiving complaints in this regard.

Verification Process Reveals the Scale

Mishra stated that when BCI initiated a degree verification process, nearly 40 percent of lawyers failed to fill the verification form, raising serious concerns about the authenticity of their qualifications. The BCI is currently in the process of taking action in the matter.

Claim Linked to CJI’s Cockroach Remark Controversy

The BCI chairman’s statement comes in the context of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant’s controversial remark, which was widely interpreted as comparing unemployed youth to cockroaches. The CJI had since clarified that his remarks were not directed at unemployed youth but at those with fake degrees who enter professions and attack the system from within. Mishra endorsed this interpretation, saying the CJI was referring to individuals who enter the legal profession with fraudulent qualifications, wear black coats and robes, appear in courts, and assert dominance by attacking government institutions.
