Ranchi, April 21: 65-year-old Doman Rana, a resident of Chatra got a fresh lease of life at Bhagwan Mahavir MEDICA Superspeciality Hospital, Ranchi after lying in bed for months where he was unable to walk and talk.
Rana came to MEDICA with his relatives in a situation where he had severe pain in his back and chest and also he was unable to walk and talk.
Dr Gunjesh Kumar Singh, Consultant Oncologist at MEDICA who treated Doman Rana said, “He came to me in the OPD on January 8 in a condition where he was bedridden and had severe pain in his back and limbs.”
“On examination, we found that he was unable to move his lower limbs at all. After getting his investigations done, we found that his haemoglobin was very low, creatinine was very high (suggestive of acute renal failure) and blood calcium was very high, which was life-threatening. We admitted him and started supportive care for all these abnormalities and did bone marrow examinations. We found that he was suffering from blood cancer, which is known as multiple myeloma,” he said.
Dr Gunjesh further said, “We started chemotherapy with Bortezomib, cyclophosphamide, and dexamethasone (VCD regimen). During treatment, his symptoms become better. He completed his 3 months of treatment and now he can walk, he is painless now, and his blood is also normalised. Now he can travel alone and comes to us by travelling 100 km without any assistance. He is on regular treatment and his treatment will continue for the next 4-5 months.”
Describing multiple myeloma Dr Gunjesh said that it is a type of blood cancer, which arises from bone marrow. It is commonly seen in the older age group. In the early stage, it can present with anaemia and bony pain, while in an advanced stage it can lead to acute renal failure and raised blood calcium levels which can cause sudden cardiac arrest. Adequate diagnosis and treatment can help these patients recover from life-threatening conditions.
Doman Rana said that he is now able to walk where earlier two people were required to carry him from one place to other. But now with the appropriate treatment by Dr Gunjesh the condition has become soothing.
“Now after so many months, I have started walking and even can climb the stairs without any help. Earlier, I used to visit the hospital with my relatives but after the treatment, I am now capable enough to come alone to get my therapies done at the hospital,” Rana added.
