Kolkata: West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has issued a scathing critique of the state government following the chaos at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where unidentified miscreants vandalized the premises late on August 14. The unrest came in the wake of the shocking rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the same hospital on August 9, a crime that has sparked widespread outrage and protests.
During his visit to the hospital on Thursday, Governor Bose met with the agitating junior doctors and inspected the emergency department, which had been targeted by the vandals the previous night. Addressing the media, he expressed his deep disappointment with the handling of the situation, labeling the incident as “shocking, shattering, and deplorable.”
“What I saw, what I heard, what I was told, and what is reported is nothing short of a shame for Bengal, India, and humanity. The custodians of law have themselves become conspirators,” Governor Bose stated during a press conference. He emphasized that the primary responsibility for the incident lies with the state government, criticizing the politicization and criminalization of a section of the police force. “This rot has to end. The government is responsible for this,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has taken over the investigation of the doctor’s rape-murder case, visited the victim’s residence in North 24 Parganas on Thursday. The CBI team recorded statements from the victim’s parents as part of their ongoing investigation.
The tension at RG Kar Hospital escalated when a mob, reportedly disguised as protestors, entered the hospital premises on Wednesday midnight. The group vandalized property, pelted stones at police personnel, and caused significant damage to vehicles, including a police vehicle. The situation forced security officials to disperse the mob using teargas.
Governor Bose assured the protesting doctors of his support, stating, “I am with you, and we will work together to solve this. I assure you justice. My ears and eyes are open.” He also pledged to take action after consulting with the police and gathering opinions from the medical community.
Earlier, Kolkata Police clarified that the crime scene related to the brutal rape and murder had not been disturbed during the vandalism. However, the incident has intensified the demand for a secure environment for doctors, with students like final-year MBBS student Anupam Roy accusing the mob of deliberate vandalism and calling for public support.
The situation remains tense as the investigation continues, and the spotlight remains on the state government’s response to both the crime and the subsequent unrest.
