Ranchi, Aug 1: A court in Kolkata has granted six days’ police remand of Jharkhand High Court lawyer Rajiv Kumar who was arrested by the Kolkata police on Sunday evening.
Meanwhile, the Jharkhand High Court will hear the habeas corpus petition of Satyadeo Roy on Tuesday. Satyadeo Roy is the father of Jharkhand High Court lawyer Rajiv Kumar who was arrested by Kolkata police on the charge of extorting money from a Kolkata-based businessman Amit Agrawal in the name of a PIL lodged at Jharkhand High Court.
Satyadeo Roy is a retired accounts officer and he said that his son was illegally detained by the Kolkata police.
Satyadeo Roy was represented by his lawyer Ritu Kumar.
“The habeas corpus has been mentioned before the bench of Chief Justice Dr Ravi Ranjan and Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad. The matter has been listed for hearing on Tuesday at 10.30 am,” Ritu Kumar said.
It is alleged that Rajiv Kumar demanded Rs 10 Crore from Amit Agrawal to manage a PIL against him being heard by Jharkhand High Court. Chief Minister Hemant Soren is the respondent in this PIL which was lodged by Shiv Shankar Sharma. Rajiv Kumar is the lawyer of the petitioner.
The judicial works at the Jharkhand High Court remained affected for some hours as lawyers were busy holding meetings to discuss issues pertaining to the arrest of Rajiv Kumar, senior High Court lawyer Naveen Kumar informed.
