Bhopal, Oct 27: After a gas leak from a water treatment plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, several individuals were left choking and gasping in fear last evening.

According to officials, 15 of them, including two youngsters, had to be brought to the hospital, but their condition is now considered to be stable.

A chlorine cylinder that was put at the city’s water treatment facility in the Mother India community is where the gas leak was first noticed. Locals said that about 6 o’clock they left their homes due to a strong gas odour in the neighbourhood.

A lot of them began to cough and throw up, and several of them also complained of having burning eyes. They claimed that due to the intense scent, two children also passed out. The police and fire services were then notified by the residents.

After the technicians attempted to fix the cylinder after the gas leak was originally discovered at 2:30 pm, the gas began to leak again in the evening, according to officials.

According to Bhopal Collector Avinash Lavania, the situation was under control in less than 30 minutes. He claimed that in order for the gas to disperse in the water, the firefighters and civic body officials submerged the cylinder in a water tank.

The cylinder, which contained around 900 kg of chlorine gas, was dropped into the water tank using a crane. Mother India colony, one of the worst-affected locations of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy that claimed thousands of lives and affected more than 5.5 lakh people, is close to Idgah hills and is home to roughly 400 households.

According to officials, an investigation has been started to determine the precise source of the gas leak.
