Kolkata: The brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata have ignited a fierce political battle between the West Bengal government and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In a significant escalation, the BJP has accused a Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament of being implicated in the crime, alleging a broader coverup by the ruling party.
Union Minister and Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar made these explosive claims during a press conference, questioning the silence of female TMC MPs on the matter. Majumdar also revealed that his party had obtained purported screenshots from the doctor’s WhatsApp group that mentioned drugs and a sex racket, with repeated references to a TMC MP and his nephew.
“In the doctor’s team, there have been discussions in their WhatsApp group about drugs and a sex racket. The names of a TMC MP and his nephew keep coming up. I don’t know what happened, but something is clearly wrong,” Majumdar asserted.
He further criticized the inaction of TMC women MPs, noting that despite their numbers, none have spoken out on the issue. “There are so many women MPs in TMC, yet not a single one has said much about this. Even those who studied at the same medical college as the victim have remained silent,” he added.
Majumdar also raised concerns about the handling of the postmortem, alleging that it was conducted illegally at night. He claimed that the state police prematurely informed the victim’s family that their daughter had committed suicide, suggesting a deliberate attempt to scapegoat someone and cover up the true nature of the crime.
“The way the issue was suppressed indicates that the West Bengal government was trying to protect someone,” Majumdar concluded.
Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has intensified its probe into the case, with a team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) visiting RG Kar Medical College to investigate the crime scene. The investigation follows the high-profile transfer of the case to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court.
The incident has also triggered widespread protests within the medical community. Junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have continued their strike, leading to the closure of Outpatient Department (OPD) services on Wednesday. The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) is supporting the protests with a nationwide shutdown of OPD services, expressing solidarity with the victim and demanding justice.
