New Delhi: On the 51st anniversary of the Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975, the BJP observed the day as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas (Constitution Murder Day) across the country, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi paying tribute to all those who defended democratic values during that dark period.
PM Modi’s Statement
In a social media post, PM Modi wrote that Emergency was a direct attack on India’s Constitution, during which civil liberties were suspended, freedom of expression was curtailed, and leaders, journalists, and social workers were jailed. He said the day also brought forth the extraordinary courage of countless citizens who refused to remain silent and upheld the ideals enshrined in the Constitution. He described the Constitution as a symbol of the aspirations, rights, and duties of 140 crore Indians and paid tribute to all those who resisted the Emergency.
Reminder of Democracy’s Fragility
PM Modi said Samvidhan Hatya Diwas reminds the nation of that dark era when democracy was severely crushed, and serves as inspiration to remain committed to the protection of democracy, the Constitution, and civil rights at all times.
