Caracas: Two powerful earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela on Thursday within an interval of just 39 seconds, causing widespread devastation with hundreds of buildings collapsing. At least 32 deaths have been confirmed so far, with fears that the toll could exceed 10,000. Over 700 people have been injured.
Scale of Destruction
Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodriguez confirmed the death toll and injuries, while Home Minister Diosdado Cabello announced that gas supply has been temporarily suspended for safety reasons. Venezuelan newspaper El Universal quoted Cabello saying a large number of buildings have been damaged across the country.
India and US Offer Assistance
PM Narendra Modi expressed grief over the catastrophe and offered India’s support for ongoing rescue operations. US President Donald Trump also offered assistance, posting on Truth Social that America is fully ready to help and that he has directed all government agencies to be prepared for immediate action.
