Jaipur, Sept 20: Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday staged a sizable protest demonstration in Jaipur in response to the Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), which has impacted 11 lakh cattle and killed over 57,000 in Rajasthan.

Police were attacked by protesters who tore down barricades while yelling demands for rapid action.

The issue was brought up in the state assembly by the BJP as well. A BJP lawmaker took a cow outside the state assembly on Monday in an effort to raise awareness of the lumpy skin condition among the state authorities.

Ashok Gehlot, the chief minister, has urged that lumpy illness be classified as a national calamity.

He said, “Our priority is how to save the lives of cows from lumpy skin disease. The Centre has to give the vaccine and medicines, so in such a situation we are demanding the Centre to declare it a national calamity.”

The disease has also affected Jaipur’s milk collection, driving up the cost of the state’s made sweets. Although there hasn’t been a disruption in supply yet, the largest milk cooperative in the state, Jaipur Dairy Federation, reports that milk collection is down 15 to 18%.

Since animal husbandry is the foundation of Rajasthan’s economy, Chief Minister Gehlot has voiced concern about the current scenario. In this arid state, milk is the main source of income for farmers. As LSD has spread to 13 states, he has written to the Centre requesting that it be declared a national emergency.
