New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will issue notices to its MPs who were absent in the Lok Sabha today during the introduction of the “One Nation, One Election” Bill, sources revealed. Over 20 BJP MPs reportedly skipped the voting session, despite the party issuing a three-line whip mandating their presence.
The absence of these MPs did not affect the passage of the two bills aimed at amending the Constitution to facilitate simultaneous parliamentary and state elections. However, it provided an opportunity for the Congress to target the ruling party.
Congress leaders claimed the absenteeism reflected a lack of internal support for the bill within the BJP ranks. “If the government is so confident about its flagship policy, why were its own MPs missing?” a senior Congress leader questioned.
The BJP, however, dismissed the Congress’s claims, asserting that the bills have “overwhelming support” and the MPs’ absence would be addressed promptly. Notices will be sent to the concerned members, with explanations sought for their absence.
The introduction of the “One Nation, One Election” Bill marks a significant step towards electoral reforms, a policy long championed by the BJP to streamline governance and reduce the frequency of elections across the country.
