New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday observed that the report submitted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the suspicious killing of Dhanbad judge Uttam Anand does not indicate anything on motive or reason behind the crime.

“There is nothing in the sealed cover,” Chief Justice NV Ramana told Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta as the case was taken.

The Solicitor General responded that whatever development has taken place after the CBI took over the case has been given in the sealed cover.

“Mr Mehta, that is not the issue that we want. We want something concrete. Your people have not indicated anything about the motive or reason”, the CJ remarked.

In response, the Solicitor General said that the persons who were in the vehicle which knocked down Judge Uttam Anand are under custody, and he cannot reveal more as the interrogation of the accused is going on.
The bench, also comprising Justice Vineet Saran and Justice Surya Kant directed the CBI to submit weekly reports on the progress of the investigation to the Jharkhand High Court and requested the Chief Justice of the High Court to monitor the investigation.
The directions were issued by the Bench while hearing its suo motu case regarding the killing of Judge Uttam Anand, who was knocked down by a vehicle while on his morning walk on July 28.
The Bench has directed the suo motu case to be tagged along with another writ petition which was filed before the Apex Court in 2019 pertaining to the security of Judicial officers where notice has already been issued to States and Union of India.
