CUJ faculty, research scholars get tips for enhancement of skills

Ranchi: May 19: Faculty members and research scholars of Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ) were today on the 10th day of a two-week capacity building programme were given tips for enhancement of research skills and academic skills.

“If something cannot be measured, it cannot be improved. Research metrics are the quantitative analysis of scientific and scholarly research outputs and their impact. There are some metrics tools to check the quality of the journal like – Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, Microsoft Academic etc. There are also some parameters to evaluate the research metrics like- Journal metrics, Author metrics, Article metrics and Altmetrics,” said chief librarian of ISI, Kolkata, Kishore Chandra Satpathy while speaking on ‘Indexing Agencies and Impact Matrix: Accessing Research Impact’.

School of Natural Resource Management dean Arvind Chandra Pandey elaborated on the topic ‘Preparation of a Good Research Proposal and Report’. He explained that a research proposal is a document that is used to propose a research project, and it is usually submitted to funding agencies, academic institutions, or other related institutions.

Dean of Research, RIE, NCERT, Bhubaneswar, BN Panda gave an in-depth and detailed talk on ‘Reporting Styles of Different Types of Research – Thesis, Project Report and Others’ He explained that effective reporting is required after conducting research, otherwise it is of no use.

Panda said that some of the steps in writing an effective research reporting style are: Disseminating research results, informing policy, providing advance knowledge, improving readability, highlighting key information, and enhancing clarity.

Apart from Panda, we discussed the elements of effective reporting style of different types of research such as objectivity, clarity, structure, visual aids, tone, citation and context. Whether thesis or research project or independent research or qualitative or quantitative or mixed research reporting follows more or less similar steps like – Acknowledgments, List of Tables, Abstraction, List of Contents, Introduction, Review of Literature, Methodology , Data Analysis and Interpretation, Major Findings, Discussion of Results, Implications, Re-evaluation, Conclusion, Summary and References/Bibliography.

Chief Librarian & Incharge, PCM Museum & Archives, ISI, Kolkata Kishor Chandra Satpathy gave a talk on ‘Using Research Databases and Research Networking Sites (Databases: JSTOR, PQDT) Open, Eric, Bess, Taylor and Francis Online, Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Wiley, Elsevier/Science Direct, Springer, Sodhganga and others, Research Network Sites: Research Gate, Academics, Google Scholar, ORCID ID and others) Discussed in detail as well as how research databases can be used effectively to get important content and information about research like – Google Scholar, Shodhganga, Springer, Taylor and Francis etc.
