New Delhi, Feb 9: The Central government has directed Central universities to fill up the vacant posts of teachers, Rajya Sabha was informed on Wednesday.
“Appointment of teachers is a continuous process,” said , Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar, replying to a supplementary question.
He also said that directions have been issued to universities including IITs to fill vacant posts in a mission mode.
He stated that the government has directed IITs to include a chapter on the status of replacing these empty positions in their yearly reports.
The Minister was responding to a query from CPI(M) MP Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya regarding the government’s efforts to fill 6,535 sanctioned seats in Central universities, including IITs, that are now vacant.
Meanwhile, the Ministry stated in a written response that renowned engineering colleges such as IITs, NITs, and IIITs are classified as Institutes of National Importance and provide education and research in science and technology areas.
Admission to these universities’ varied programmes is strictly limited to qualified individuals who meet the required eligibility standards based on ranking/other metrics.
In 2021-22, the number of vacant seats in IITs was 361 in UG, 3083 in PG, and 1,852 in Ph.D. programmes, while the number in NITs was 685 in UG, 3413 in PG, and 914 in Ph.D. programmes.
The number of open seats in IIITs was 510 in UG, 813 in PG, and 527 in Ph.D.
Notably, admission to Undergraduate Programs (B.Tech) in NITs and IIITs is made through the National Testing Agency’s Joint Entrance Examination (MAIN) (NTA).
