New Delhi, May 17: The Centre lifted the wheat export embargo on Tuesday, enabling consignments handed over for inspection or recorded in the Customs Department’s systems by May 13 to go through.
“Wherever wheat consignments have been handed over to Customs for examination and have been registered into their systems on or prior to 13.5.2022, such consignments would be allowed to be exported,” the government said.
Following a request from the Egyptian government, the government also authorised a shipment of 61,500 MT of wheat bound for Egypt to be loaded at the Kandla port in Gujarat.
Notably India, the world’s second-largest wheat producer, recently stated its intention to assist neighbouring and vulnerable countries that have been negatively affected by global market fluctuations and are unable to obtain appropriate wheat supply.
On May 13, the Center issued an immediate stop on all wheat shipments. All wheat exports, including high-protein durum and regular soft bread kinds, have been switched from free to the prohibited.
The ban would not apply in cases where private trade has made prior promises through Letters of Credit, as well as in cases where the central government has provided authorization to other countries to meet their food security needs and on their governments’ requests.
